Confession time: for about eight months I treated job boards like a slot machine. Title looked vaguely related to my life? Pull the Apply lever. Feel a tiny dopamine ping. Move on. By Friday I’d have thirty applications out and a weekend of refreshing my inbox like it owed me rent.
Spoiler: the inbox did not owe me rent. It owed me nothing. And I was exhausted for no reason.
If you’re doing the same thing right now — applying to everything with “engineer,” “manager,” or “remote” in the title — this is your intervention. Not a lecture. A better system. One that is slower, slightly annoying, and weirdly effective.
The “I’m being productive” lie
Spray-and-pray feels productive because it is measurable. Numbers go up. Progress bars in your brain go brrr. You can tell your friends, “I’ve applied to forty places this week,” and they will say “wow” while privately wondering if you’re okay.
Here’s the awkward math: if your reply rate is 2%, forty applications get you less than one real conversation. You spent evenings rewriting cover letters for companies that never opened the PDF. That isn’t hustle. That’s unpaid content marketing for strangers.
I only admitted this after a particularly cursed week where I applied to a “remote” role that, three clicks deep, required living within a 30-minute drive of an office I’d never heard of. I had already uploaded my CV. Twice. Because the portal crashed. Peak comedy.
Build a boring filter (boring is the point)
Before you open any careers page, open a note. Three columns. No fancy Notion temple — a sticky note works.
- Must-haves — without these, you don’t apply. Full stop.
- Nice-to-haves — bonuses, not bait.
- Dealbreakers — the stuff that makes you close the tab with prejudice.
My must-haves looked unsexy on purpose:
- Visa / sponsorship clarity (or I’m already eligible to work there)
- A real team or product page I can find in under two minutes
- Some salary signal — band, “competitive with transparency,” anything that isn’t pure vibes
Dealbreakers:
- “Fast-paced family” with zero product description (translation: chaos + guilt)
- Posting older than six weeks with no update
- “Unlimited PTO” as the only perk (cool story, still unpaid overtime)
- Application forms that ask for my GPA from 2014 and my blood type
If a role fails the filter, close it. Do not save it for later. Later is where good intentions go to die next to your “learn Spanish” bookmark.
The 40-minute application (yes, forty)
When something passes the filter, you don’t disappear into a five-hour CV redesign. You give it forty minutes. Timer on. Coffee optional. Panic optional but not recommended.
Minutes 0–10: Skim the company like a nosy neighbor. What do they sell? Who’s hiring? Any recent news that isn’t “we’re thrilled to announce”? If you can’t explain what they do to a friend in one sentence, you’re not ready to sound smart in an interview.
Minutes 10–25: Rewrite only the top third of your CV for this role. Headline, summary, first two bullets of your latest job. Mirror their language without becoming a thesaurus crime scene. If they say “stakeholder management,” don’t write “synergistic cross-functional enablement.”
Minutes 25–40: One short note. Three to five sentences. Mention one real problem they talk about publicly — a product launch, a market, a hiring push — and how your last job relates. No “I am passionate about excellence.” Excellence is not a hobby.
Then submit. Walk away. Touch grass. Or at least touch a different browser tab.
A weekly rhythm that doesn’t ruin your evenings
This is the part people skip, then wonder why they burn out.
- Mon–Tue: Find 5–8 roles that pass the filter. Don’t apply yet. Just shortlist.
- Wed–Thu: Do the 40-minute applications. Cap at five serious ones.
- Fri: Follow-ups only. One polite bump to roles you really want. Then stop. Friday night is not for LinkedIn.
Keep a dumb little log: role, company, filter pass/fail, date applied, outcome. After two weeks you’ll see patterns — which industries ghost, which titles waste your time, which keywords actually convert. Data > vibes. Even messy data.
Special note if you’re aiming at the Gulf (or any move abroad)
The filter matters more, not less. “Global team” and “relocation support” are marketing perfume. You want the awkward specifics: sponsorship yes/no, on-site days, city, contract type. Reading for those lines first saved me from writing essays for jobs that were never going to sponsor a goldfish, let alone a human.
If the posting is silent on eligibility and the recruiter gets weird when you ask, that’s information. Expensive information if you ignore it.
What changed for me (honest version)
I went from ~30 cold applications a week to about five serious ones. Reply rate stopped looking like a rounding error. Interviews got… weirdly better? Recruiters asked sharper questions. That’s usually a sign you’re in the “maybe real” pile, not the “auto-reject after keyword scan” pile.
I still got ghosted. Ghosting is a competitive sport. But I stopped feeling like a CV vending machine, and that alone was worth the ego bruise of applying less.
Try this for two weeks
- Write your three-column filter tonight. Ten minutes.
- Cap applications at five per week.
- Log every outcome.
- Kill any process step that exists only to make you feel busy.
If after two weeks you’re still getting nowhere, adjust the filter — don’t go back to the slot machine. The slot machine already had its turn. It lost.
And if someone tells you “just apply to more,” smile politely, then do the opposite. Volume without a filter is not a strategy. It’s a coping mechanism with Wi‑Fi.
